MobileMerchant's payment app and Bluetooth card reader allow you to accept Chip and PIN credit and debit card payments and process them in real-time.
You will need an Elavon account to get started. Elavon MobileMerchant is currently available for customers in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

In addition to an Elavon Customer Account, you will need a smartphone or tablet device (see number 3 below for supported devices). You will need to download the Elavon MobileMerchant application (app) and order the PIN Entry device, which is purchased from Elavon.
What type of business would benefit from using Elavon MobileMerchant?
Elavon MobileMerchant is for any size business needing to process transactions on the go. It can also be used at your location for payments during peak sales seasons, essentially creating a new payment terminal without the added expense. MobileMerchant is perfect for many business types including transportation, field service technicians, delivery companies, professional services, retail and more.
What is needed before I can start taking payments with Elavon MobileMerchant?
Provided a mobile signal (GPRS or 3G data connection) or WiFi connection is secured and Elavon’s Chip and PIN pad is paired to the smartphone, card payments can be accepted through the smartphone or tablet anytime, anywhere.
Which types of mobile devices does Elavon MobileMerchant work with?
At this time Elavon MobileMerchant is supported on the following mobile devices:
- Apple® - Requires iOS 6 or later (including iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. This app is optimised for iPhone 5.
- And most Smartphones or tablets with a Google Android® 2.2 or higher operating system.
For security reasons the Elavon MobileMerchant app will not work on rooted devices1 or jail broken devices2.
1‘Rooting’ gives users access to the system files on the device (normally not seen) which could mean the device’s operating system could be changed or controlled.
2Jail breaking is the process of removing the limitations on your phone, freeing it from the limitations imposed on it by your carrier.
How does it work?
You download the Elavon MobileMerchant App and enter your Elavon Customer Account configuration credentials, which you would have received in your welcome email. Once the Smartphone is configured (and you have a data connection) and the PIN pad is linked, you can accept Chip and PIN credit and debit card payments.
The card is read and the user’s PIN is entered on a separate Bluetooth-linked PIN pad that is paired to the smartphone.
What payment types are supported through Elavon MobileMerchant?
Elavon MobileMerchant supports all major credit and debit cards like Visa and MasterCard.
Are Card-Not-Present transactions supported?
Yes, Elavon MobileMerchant solution also comes with a ‘Virtual Terminal’ allowing you to process Card-Not-Present transactions via the Elavon MobileMerchant web portal.
Is the Elavon MobileMerchant App secure?
Yes. The MobileMerchant app is simply an input vehicle for payment information, all transaction information is immediately encrypted and sent through Elavon’s secure data centre. Elavon MobileMerchant offers full security and support for Chip and PIN and Card-Not-Present transactions3.
It ensures that cardholder information is encrypted so no cardholder data can be captured by the smartphone and abused. The PCI compliant payment app and card reader have undergone severe testing and strict validation including the payment industry certification standards.
No payment information is stored on or accessible through the App.
3Card Not Present transactions cannot be processed on the smartphone. This is done on the Virtual Terminal included in the solution.
Can I print a receipt for the customer?
MobileMerchant does not produce a paper receipt making it environmentally friendly. You can easily configure receipts to be emailed or sent as an SMS to your customers. A record of the transaction is also accessible to you from the Elavon MobileMerchant web portal.
Please note, however, that if you collect any customer personal data via the App you will be responsible for collecting and handling that data in accordance with, and otherwise complying with, applicable data protection laws in doing so.
Can a tip be included with a sale?
Yes, tips are supported on Elavon MobileMerchant. Tip/Gratuity amount can be configured in either a whole number or percentage amount.
Can Discounts be applied?
Customers have the option to apply a discount amount on a transaction. The discount amount is applied to the order total. Additionally, the discount can be entered as a whole amount or percentage amount.
What happens if a call is received during a transaction?
When a call is received during a transaction, the transaction will continue unaffected. When the call is finished, the transaction result would be visible, i.e. approved/declined. If however the app is waiting for input from you or your customer, the transaction may timeout and may have to be restarted, e.g. if the cardholder is waiting to enter their PIN or if a voice referral is in progress. The timeouts are approximately 5 minutes.
What are the authorisation costs?
The Smartphone or tablet doesn’t dial for an authorisation. Instead it uses the device’s data internet connection. Cost, therefore, will depend on your data tariff. Normal data fees apply to using the MobileMerchant solution.

With Elavon MobileMerchant you will benefit from WebMIS, an online data management system that offers you fast and easy access to your credit and debit card transaction data.
WebMIS is a secure and easy-to-use online data management system allows you to:

- Monitor 12 months of payment activity, manage user rights, etc.

What should I expect once approved?
- You will receive a Thyron PIN Pad, Welcome email and app download instructions
- You should first establish a Bluetooth connection between the PIN pad and your smartphone or tablet (i.e. pair the PIN pad to the mobile device)
- You can then download the Elavon MobileMerchant App
- Ready for business! You can begin processing payments
