My name is John Stanley, and I’m Head of European Sales for Retail.
What I love about my role is the ever increasing rate of change in the payments industry. The landscape is continually evolving and that evolution is becoming faster. We are continually seeing new players in the payments space – some of which want to eat our lunch, others want a share of it, and some want to increase our portion size. Being at the forefront of these changes and, in some instances, helping to drive them is a really exciting aspect of my role and probably the part I love most.
As most people working in sales would know, there is no such thing as a typical day, especially working with retail customers. Their needs means the International Corporate team interact on a regular basis with many different areas within Elavon and our partners – both in Europe and the US. One day, we may be discussing settlement in Hungarian Forint, the next, how Italian debit schemes are processed through VISA and MasterCard. It’s not all glamour. There are a lot of 4am starts and 11pm finishes to be able to meet with our potential customers – they tend not to be conveniently placed geographically! But it’s all part of what makes it exciting.
Having a work/life balance is also important to me. Outside of work, I try to keep fit by running and cycling. After a tough day it is all too easy to sit down with a decent glass of red wine. Go for a run instead! After a 30-minute run, you feel refreshed and good about yourself (and you’ve then earned that glass of red!).
