Whether you know it as Genova or Genoa, getting around the gorgeous Italian city just became easier.

For the first time, passengers using the city’s AMT Genova network can simply tap and pay to travel using any debit, credit or prepaid card or any payment-enabled device – like a smartphone or smartwatch, thanks to the partnership between local transportation provider ATM and Visa.

AMT Genova is the company that manages public transport in the metropolitan city of Genoa, and Italy’s fifth largest player in the sector.

As part of this collaboration, Elavon Europe is proudly working with Conduent Transportation, a leading provider of automated and analytics-based transportation solutions for government agencies, and Cybersource, a Visa platform providing businesses with the flexibility to create and evolve payment solutions their way, to better connect public transport systems right across Europe.

Together, making travel more convenient and safer for passengers while helping transport providers take advantage of emerging technologies to enhance efficiency, reduce costs and increase resilience.

Genova is the first to bring the benefits of this partnership between Elavon and Cybersource to their integrated transport network, with more towns and cities getting on board soon.

Connected without contact

“While you’re crossing the city by road, rail or ferry, going uptown on a lift, scaling a mountainside on a fabulous funicular bus or travelling between Genova and Portofino, our solutions could allow you to ride them all using contactless payments,” says Enrico Binotti, customer solutions manager for the Genova project with Elavon Europe.

“Connecting modern networks across such a varied landscape and historic city has its challenges, but that’s where our partnership shows its strength. We’re making it possible for passengers to pay a fare exactly the same way you’d buy a coffee – but potentially anywhere. And we know the easier we make it, the more passengers will use it.” Enrico adds.

No special cards or apps are required, and the technology being used allows ATM Genova to configure fare caps to offer cost savings for passengers without any additional effort.

“With the launch of contactless payment, Genoa's public transport opens up a new way of experiencing transport that is simpler, faster, safer and more convenient, both for those who work and live here, and for the people who want to visit this wonderful city,” says Stefano Stoppani, Country Manager for Visa in Italy.

“Contactless is one of the technologies that, more than others, is making its way back to normality. Electronic payments can make the difference in regaining trust in public transport, but also in contributing to an evolution of the city that is more respectful of the environment.”

Simply tap and pay… get on with your day.
