Has the pandemic accelerated the move towards a cashless society? In our *online survey with Ipsos Mori of 1,101 UK adults aged 16-75, more than two thirds (68%) told us they’ll be actively seeking to use card or contactless payments from now on.
Social distancing is going to be with us for some time yet - if not permanently, in one form or another.
It’s essential then to factor it into day-to-day operations for the safety of your staff and customers. Working with us can take the complexity out of that challenge.
Since the pandemic was declared, Elavon Europe has taken the following steps to help you with social distancing at your point-of-sale and to reduce the need for anyone to handle cash:
- We lobbied alongside our industry colleagues for an urgent increase in the contactless limit for card users, taking it from £30 to £45. This reduces the need for cardholders to enter their PIN, and reduces the time customers spend in queues and at your point-of-sale with your staff.
- Digital wallets, such as those linked to smartphones and smartwatches, allow even higher limits to be authorised without your customer touching the PIN pad as facial recognition or a fingerprint can be used to verify identification.
- We confirmed signatures are no longer required on receipts for magstripe transactions, again reducing the need for interaction.
Hygiene and best practices
Cleaning your terminals and card machines should already have been routine, but just in case it wasn’t:
- Within days of the pandemic being confirmed in Europe, we issued advice on how best to clean and disinfect your card machines and terminals - in English, Polish and German.
- We also provided simple troubleshooting guides, also in English, Polish and German to help you and your staff overcome the most common queries without having to have additional people interacting with your card machine, and while our engineers would have been unable to visit your site.
- And as businesses continue to reopen in phases, we have a simple guide on how to reboot and update your card machines if they have not been used for a little while.

Online interviews were carried out amongst adults aged 16-75 in the UK.
Our respondents base includes 1101 adults who completed the survey between 22 May-25 May 2020.
The data has been weighted to the known population profile by age, gender, region, working status and social grade to be nationally representative and reflect the adult population of the UK.
