Located on Dublin’s Grafton Street and in suburban Stillorgan, Rocks Jewellers has offered personal service and timeless jewellery since 1972. Founded by watchmaker Dermot Rock and his wife Margaret, this family business prides itself in helping customers celebrate meaningful moments.

Rocks has always focused on craftsmanship, according to the couple’s son and managing director of the business, Robert Rock. “We design and create our jewellery – including engagement rings, wedding bands and diamond pieces – in our Grafton Street workshop under the direction of my brother Michael, a master craftsman. That’s something that really sets us apart.”

Rocks offers bespoke services, generally by appointment, and customers are willing to travel considerable distances for their ideal ring. But whether it’s a simple gold band or a customised diamond ring, the experience is relaxed, thoughtful and tailored. “Our consultants guide each client through their purchase, offering advice and opinions along the way,” Robert explains. “It’s about helping customers through important life moments with care and expertise.”

As the business expanded from its original Stillorgan location to its second store in the city centre, the need for a reliable and scalable payment solution became clear. That’s when their partnership with Elavon began.

“We’ve been working with Elavon for over 15 years now,” Robert shares. “The relationship started as part of our commitment to future-proof our payment systems, especially as our business grew to a new location in Grafton Street.”

Jewellery retail is a high-value, high-investment industry. Fast access to funds is essential for managing payroll, rent and the purchase of precious raw materials. “Fast funding is absolutely crucial,” Robert says. “Knowing that transactions are settled quickly allows us to forecast cash flow and make plans with confidence.”

Supporting the customer journey

Mobile terminals from Elavon have transformed how Rocks serves its customers – especially during busy periods like Christmas or during in-store consultations. “We often have consultations at different points within our stores,” Robert explains. “The mobile card machines let us complete the transaction right there, without interrupting the moment. It means payments can be handled quickly and discreetly, which is important during what’s often an emotional time.”

Customers appreciate ease and security when it comes to payment, particularly when making high-value purchases. “Some customers feel a bit anxious about making larger payments with their card, so when the transaction goes through smoothly, it’s always appreciated,” Robert says. “People expect mobile and contactless options now. If they weren’t available, it would definitely disrupt the experience.”

Security is paramount in a business where transactions are both emotionally and financially significant. Elavon’s systems offer peace of mind for both customers and staff. “Elavon has always been great at keeping us compliant and secure,” Robert affirms. “Their systems have built-in protections, and their team is always available if we have a question or concern.”

He recalls a time when Elavon’s support made all the difference: “During a busy Christmas period, we had a technical issue with one of our terminals due to internet connectivity. The Elavon team talked us through the troubleshooting and got it sorted quickly – it was a real relief to get back to serving customers without delay.”

Beyond the technical reliability, Robert sees payments as an extension of the customer experience. “When buying something like an engagement ring, payment is the final step in a personal journey,” he says. “It needs to be smooth, secure and respectful of the emotional significance of the purchase. Elavon helps us deliver that.”

In luxury retail, the payment process can influence not just satisfaction, but conversion. “When a customer is ready to commit to a significant piece, any friction at the payment stage gives potential for hesitation,” Robert notes. “Having fast, flexible and trusted payment options helps us maintain momentum and confidence.”

Adapting to customer preferences

Offering a wide range of payment options is essential for customer satisfaction. From mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Revolut to digital bank transfers, Rocks sees a variety of preferences across its customer base. “It’s vital that customers can choose how they want to pay,” Robert explains. “Tourists tend to use physical cards with chip and PIN. For larger purchases, some prefer to make a bank transfer.”

While payment preferences are quite similar across both stores, Rocks’ suburban store sees more digital wallet use – especially for gifting products. “Stillorgan has higher footfall and more spontaneous purchases,” Robert says. “City-centre customers often come in with something specific in mind and are committing to a forever piece of jewellery. Elavon supports both types of customers really well.”

With Grafton Street attracting a steady stream of overseas shoppers, Rocks facilitates tax-free shopping to enhance the customer experience. “Both our stores support tax-free shopping, but it’s really important in the city centre,” Robert explains. “Customers appreciate having all the information they need to navigate the process easily.”

The ability to accept a wide range of payment methods also helps Rocks cater to different demographics. “Some customers are more comfortable with mobile wallets and expect instant confirmation,” Robert says. “Others might prefer chip and PIN or even ask about bank transfers. Being able to say ‘yes’ to all these options makes a big difference.”

With more than five decades of experience, Rocks Jewellers continues to evolve with Elavon as a trusted payments partner. "We help customers mark life milestones – from christenings, graduations and 21st birthdays to engagements, weddings and even eternity rings when children are born. Trusting Elavon with our payments processing lets us focus on our customers."
